How to get the most out of your dance classes in 2014

Get the right gear!

Your studio will have a list of uniform requirements for every style of dance whether it be ballet or hip hop and everything in between! These requirements are chosen by your dance teacher because they understand what correct footwear and clothing is required for each style and how the right attire will help you in your lessons. For example, in ballet a leotard is traditionally worn as it helps your teacher to evaluate your technique and positioning, rather than just wearing loose fitting clothing. Some brands offer a budget range of clothing and footwear for those budding ballerinas who don’t necessarily need the top-of-the-line dance wear.

Eat before your class/ drink plenty of water!

Eating about half an hour before your class is important to give you enough energy, but to also help with concentration and focus. For more info on nutrition check our post here.

Stretch/warm up!

Get to the studio with enough time to stretch and warm up before your class – or do it before you leave home! It takes about 5-10 minutes to warm up so if you get it done before your class you will be ready to go straight away and it will improve your overall performance. Leave it at the door!

One of the best things about dance is that it is a stress reliever as well as great exercise. If you arrive to class with other things weighing down your thoughts you wont be focusing your energy into dance. You will leave feeling unfulfilled and more frustrated then you did before. When you arrive at the studio envision yourself leaving all of your worries at the door and walk into class with a clear mind. Once you get stuck into the class you won’t have time to think of anything else!

Teacher knows best!

Listen to your teacher and follow their instructions –they are there to help you be the best dancer you can be! Take on their advice, be encouraged by their words and ask questions if you are unsure about what you are doing!

Set yourself goals!

Setting goals is a great way to stay motivated throughout the year. Maybe your goal will be to pull off a move you couldn’t land last year or finally being able to do the splits. Take note of where you are now and then where you are at the end of the year – you will be amazed at what you can achieve and it will inspire you to continue to improve as a dancer. Don’t compare yourself to others! Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Celebrate your strengths and use anything you can’t do just yet as motivation to keep on practicing!

Practice makes perfect!

Go home and practice new moves you have learnt or new routines. Get the music you use in class or ask you teacher for a copy. Film yourself and watch it back to pick up on anything that needs work or practice with a friend to make it more fun!

..and the most important rule of all…

Have fun! Dance is a great way to get exercise, have a laugh and make lots of life time friends! There are many different levels of dance whether you are looking to just have some fun or looking for something a bit more serious.
